Hilary Duff released her sixth studio album “Luck… or Something” on February 20th and it was all the nostalgia that her fans were asking for. Her much anticipated return to music was met with with lots of support. The album is filled with some great pop songs, but a pleasant surprise for listeners was the song “Growing Up”. Immediately you can hear the influence from Blink 182’s Dammit in the intro chords.
Duff’s song tributes directly to Blink’s Dammit especially in the chorus. The words are slightly reworked to reflect on friendship vs a breakup but the emotions are the same. The acceptance “I guess this is growing up” reflecting on how life is changing as time goes on.
“Growing Up” And it’ll happen once again
I’ll turn to you, friend
‘Cause I know you’ll understand
And you will until the end
And when everybody’s gone
They got busy and moved on
We’ll face it on our own
And I guess this is growing up
“Dammit” And it’s happened once again
I’ll turn to a friend
Someone that understands
And sees through the master plan
But everybody’s gone
And I’ve been here for too long
To face this on my own
Well, I guess this is growing up
Duff has told other magazines that she wanted to honor her fans with this song since she grew up with her fans and wanted to pay tribute to one of her favorite bands. And she made sure to give blink writing credits – Mark Hoppus, Tom DeLonge and original drummer Scott Raynor are credited on the song.
